Rosario Islands Private Boat Tour from Barú: A Perfect One-Day Itinerary

by | Oct 8, 2026 | English | 0 comments

The Rosario Islands are a chain of around 27 small coral islands protected inside the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Natural Park. Crystal-clear water, mangroves and coral reefs make them the most popular day trip from Cartagena. But the crowded shared tours that leave from the city are a very different experience from a Rosario Islands private boat tour that starts in Barú. Here is how we would plan your day.

Why a private tour beats a shared tour

Shared tours follow a fixed route, stop at the same busy beaches as everyone else and run on someone else’s schedule. With a private boat:

  • You choose the stops, the pace and the lunch spot.
  • You travel only with your own group.
  • You can leave early to beat the crowds or stay late for the sunset.
  • Starting from Barú, the islands are only 20 to 30 minutes away.

The itinerary

9:00 Board near your hotel in Barú

Your captain meets you at the dock closest to your hotel, whether you are at the Sofitel Barú Calablanca or a boutique hotel nearby. Coolers are filled with ice and water, and your playlist is ready on the Bluetooth speaker.

9:30 First swim in shallow turquoise water

We head to a calm, shallow spot where the water is waist-deep and almost transparent. It is the perfect warm-up for kids and non-swimmers.

10:30 Snorkeling over the reef

The national park protects colorful coral gardens with parrotfish, sergeant majors and the occasional ray. Your crew can recommend the best spot of the day depending on visibility and wind. Bring your own mask or ask us about snorkel gear.

12:30 Lunch at a beach club

Choose from beach clubs like Mangata, PA’UE, Coco Loco or Corona Island. Each has a different style, from barefoot luxury to relaxed island vibes. Browse our list of Rosario Islands beach clubs to pick your favorite. Prefer to eat on board? Add private catering and your crew will set up lunch on the deck.

15:00 Sandbar or Cholón

For a relaxing afternoon, we anchor at a sandbar and let you float. For a party, we head to Cholón, the famous lagoon where boats gather with music. If a party is the main goal of your trip, see the private and shared options at Cartagena Party Boats.

16:30 Golden hour cruise back to Barú

The light at the end of the day is spectacular. Grab your camera, pour a last drink and enjoy the ride back to your hotel.

Which boat should you choose?

  • Couples and small families: a mini yacht gives shade, comfort and privacy.
  • Groups of 10 to 20: a luxury yacht with air-conditioned cabins.
  • Big groups and celebrations: a catamaran for stability and space.
  • Tight budget: a private speedboat from Botegena, with captain, fuel, water and ice included.

What to bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (please protect the coral)
  • Hat, sunglasses and a light long-sleeve shirt
  • Swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes
  • Cash in Colombian pesos for beach club extras and tips
  • Your passport or ID, as the coast guard may check documents
  • A waterproof phone pouch

Insider tips from our captains

  • Leave early. The water is calmer and the beaches are empty before 11:00.
  • Book lunch in advance, especially from December to April and on Colombian holiday weekends.
  • Ask about park fees. National park and port fees may apply depending on the route; we include them in your quote when relevant.
  • Do not touch the coral and never feed the fish. The reef is fragile.
